The neural lobe of the pituitary gland (also known as the posterior pituitary or neurohypophysis) consists mainly of endings of nerve cells whose origins are in the hypothalamus (Fig. 1.2).
The principal secretions of the neurohypophysis are oxytocin and vasopressin (ADH). There are no known disorders resulting from an excess or deficiency of oxytocin. Excessive release of vasopressin causes SIAD, and vasopressin deficiency causes cranial diabetes inspididus, which is associated with polyuria and polydipsia.
